1993 - PhD in Control Engineering and Computer Science (Dottorato di ricerca in Ingegneria Informatica ed Automatica - V ciclo), Politecnico di Milano, Italy.
1989 - "Laurea" Degree in Electronic Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, Italy.

Research From 1996
IDSIA Lugano - Senior research scientist. The main research activities and interests are:
- modelling and simulation of natural resources systems, integration and re-use of simulation models. - optimisation and simulation of intermodal terminals;
- efficient management of multipurpose reservoir networks (in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano);

Research scientist at the Division of Water Resources of CSIRO Australia, Black Mountain Labs., Canberra, Australia. Dr Rizzoli took part in the design of WinCMSS, a software for the management of the nutrient balance in small catchments and also designed a prototype of an environment for the integration of environmental models.

Visiting research fellow at the "Institut de Zoologie et d'Ecologie Animale Universite' de Lausanne. He developed the software tool "LakeMaker" for modelling and simulation of the eutrophication process of deep lakes.

Teaching From 1997
Lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland for the course titled  "Informatica di Base" (Introduction to Computer Science).

Holds a short course on mathematical modelling and simulation in environmental systems for the NYNMPHAE project, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Brescia.

1994 - 1996
Lecturer of the experimental classes of "Elementi di Automatica" (Basics of Control Engineering) and of "Analisi dei Sistemi" (Systems Analysis) at Politecnico di Milano, in the Faculties of Milan and Como.

Consulting From 2001
Founding member of AntOptima SA, a spin-off company of IDSIA, specialised in the development of solutions for the optimisation and simulation of processes.

Partner in the "Studio Associato di Ingegneria PRT", a small engineering firm specialized in providing software solutions to environmental management and control process control problems.

1994 - 1996
Research consultant for ISMES SpA Bergamo. Application of object-oriented analysis and design techniques to the management of water systems.

consultant for Internet technologies and applications for various small firms.
